Change in ration from 21 January 2025: Wheat, rice and ₹ 2100 in account

Changes in items available in ration

The government has made some important changes in the ration distribution system. Now ration card holders will get the following amount of grains:

• First:
  • Rice : 3 kg
  • Wheat : 2 kg
• Now:
  • Rice: 2.5 kg
  • Wheat : 2 kg

Changes have also been made for Antyodaya ration card holders:

• First:
  • Rice : 21 kg
  • Wheat : 14 kg
• Now:
  • Rice : 18 kg
  • Wheat: 17 kg

The total quantity (35 kg) will remain the same, but the proportion of rice and wheat has been changed.

Eligibility Criteria

To avail the benefits of this scheme, the beneficiaries must fulfill the following conditions:

• It is mandatory to be a ration card holder.
• The annual income should be less than ₹2 lakh in rural areas and ₹3 lakh in urban areas.
• e-KYC process must be completed.
• There should not be any government employee in the family.
• Must be a BPL (Below Poverty Line) or Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) card holder.

4. Bank account statement

6. Key benefits of the scheme

   Under this new scheme, poor families will get the following benefits:

   1. Free wheat and rice every month.
   2. ₹2100 will be deposited directly into the bank account as financial assistance.
   3. “One Nation One Ration Card” facility through which ration can be availed anywhere in the country.
   4. Digital verification to stop fake ration cards.
   5. Improvement in gas cylinder distribution system.

   e-KYC mandatory

   The government has made e-KYC mandatory to prevent fake beneficiaries. Ration cards of people who do not get e-KYC done can be cancelled. The e-KYC process can be completed both online and offline.

   Impact of the scheme

   This scheme will not only provide food security to poor families but will also strengthen their financial condition. Apart from this, the “One Nation One Ration Card” facility will prove to be a big relief for migrant laborers.

   Important points

   • This scheme has been implemented under the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
   • The government has estimated to spend around ₹12 lakh crore on this scheme.
   • It aims to benefit around 80 crore people across the country.

   Concerns about the plan

   Though this scheme can prove to be very beneficial for the poor, there could be some challenges in its implementation:

   1. Many people may face problems due to not completing the e-KYC process on time.
   2. Strict monitoring will be required to prevent corruption in the distribution system.
   3. Digital verification may be challenging in rural areas.
